Zion William Teasley was arrested by authorities after he was allegedly seen on security tape running away from the hiking route where an Arizona woman was brutally murdered after being attacked from behind.
The Phoenix Police Department confirmed Thursday evening that a man has been arrested in connection with Lauren Heike’s death. Teasley, 22, was charged with first-degree murder in court Friday morning, according to KNXV-TV.
His bond was set at one million dollars. Teasley’s attorney information was not immediately accessible, and it is unknown whether he pleaded guilty or not to the accusation. According to authorities, DNA and cell phone, evidence tied Teasley to the death of 29-year-old Heike. Prosecutors believe the horrific act was also planned.

Prosecutors claim Teasley bought a plane ticket and planned to fly to Detroit on Thursday, six days after the murder. According to the site, he was arrested at his residence. Authorities have yet to release a motive in the death of Heike, who was killed after being attacked during a solo hike on a Phoenix neighborhood trail on April 28. At a press conference, Phoenix police Lt. James Hester described the incident as “vicious.”
A passerby discovered her body in an area of the trail that was not apparent, according to authorities. The actual cause of death has not been revealed, and it is unknown whether the suspect and victim knew each other before the incident.
“She was beautiful on the inside and out,” Lana Heike, Heike’s mother, told reporters a day before her daughter’s alleged killer was apprehended. “She had a wonderful heart.” Everyone who met her adored her. She was quite amusing. She was a wonderful youngster who meant everything to us.” Teasley is scheduled to appear in court again on May 11.
