Willie J. Campbell, a longtime bass player with the James Harman Band and the Fabulous Thunderbirds, died on December 18, 2022. Willie J. played bass on a slew of records, but many people first remember him for his crucial contribution to James Harman Band’s iconic “That Dangerous Gentlemens” line-up in the 1980s, which also included Campbell, Stephen Hodges on drums, Kid Ramos, and Hollywood Fats on guitars.

Campbell, however, in August informed his fans and loved ones of his illness. Campbell said that he has been diagnosed with ALS. Campbell thus revealed his physical condition to fans with a written statement. I don’t have cancer. There have been some rumors about it. 2016, I started twitching in my hands. That went away after a while. 2018, I started having what is called twitching in the legs. They were happening 24/7. With that came severe cramps. 2019, he went to one of the best neuromuscular specialists in the country. I was diagnosed with cramps and fasciculations syndrome.

In 2021, I started experiencing changes in my breathing, walking, and talking. On March 15, 2022, I received the official diagnosis of ALS. Lou Gehrig’s disease. Campbell revealed that the disease not only affects his body but also his mind. He suffers from depression as a result of the consequences of the disease. But he will not lose hope as he received all kinds of support from his wife Lisa and his two daughters during his difficult time. The musician said that he will not give up easily and fights to the last breath.

Finally, in the statement, Willie shares a heartfelt message for his fans saying:

“What I really want to share here is: please be fully in the moment. Enjoy everyone and everything you can, while you can. There are no guarantees. I want to tell you that the fight is not over. We will continue to fight this. We have not lost hope.”
