William “Romello” Clay froze to death on his 56th birthday during the historic winter storm that hit the region on Christmas Eve, his family said. Family members identified William Clay as the person found face down in the snow at Bailey and Kensington avenues in Eerie County. A disturbing video of the frozen body began circulating online after it was discovered early Saturday morning, WGRV reported. City officials later confirmed it was the third death in the county during the monster blizzard.
Buffalo police have yet to officially release the identity and were unable to share further details when contacted by Post. Clay’s sister, Sophie Clay, posted on Facebook early Saturday morning that her brother was missing, adding that she regularly frequented the nearby 7-Eleven. Hours later, she revealed that he was found dead and created a GoFundMe to cover his funeral expenses.
I am the sister of the gentleman who lost his life during the 2022 snowstorm on 12/24/2022,” she wrote on the fundraising page. My brother lost his life unexpectedly on his birthday,” she added.

Another relative, Laura Lashomb, told friends and family on Facebook that Clay was “found frozen” after he “went to the store.” Lashomb said that he was mentally ill and it is possible that she did not take his medication. According to Sophie, Clay lived less than a mile from where his body was found. Clay’s son, Jules, said he talked to his father before his death and was able to tell her that he loved him.
“This pain is overwhelming. I can’t stop crying,” Jules wrote on Facebook.
An autopsy will be necessary to determine the official cause of death. Clay was one of three storm-related deaths reported since Gov. Kathy Hochul’s state of emergency went into effect Friday morning. Two people in Cheektowaga died after first responders failed to arrive on time after suffering “emergency medical events”.
The storm dropped a record 22 inches of snow Friday, breaking the previous daily snowfall record of 12.6 inches set in 1976, the National Weather Service said Saturday. Intense conditions are expected to remain stable through Monday. Clay is one of three people known to have died in Buffalo. The other two victims, as yet unidentified, are believed to have died because first responders were unable to reach them during medical emergencies, details of which have not been shared. A total of 23 people have been killed by the historic storm in the US, though that number is likely to rise further, with many trapped in homes without heat or power for days.
