The Nashville school shooter was identified as a white Nashville female from Nashville. A woman opened fire at a private Christian elementary school in Nashville on Monday, killing three children and three adults, authorities said. The suspected shooter was shot to death by police at the Covenant School in the city’s Green Hills neighborhood, authorities said. Authorities have not released the names or ages of the victims, but the three adults who were fatally shot worked at the school. Police identified the shooter as a 28-year-old white female from Nashville, and authorities said she was armed with “at least” two assault rifles and a handgun.

Nashville Police Chief John Drake confirmed Monday afternoon that the three children have been identified and their families have been contacted. “At this point, I will refrain from saying the ages, other than to say that I was literally moved to tears to see this, and the children were taken out of the building,” Drake said. Officials previously set up a nearby reunification center where students inside the school were transported after the shooting. Police said their preliminary investigation indicates the shooter was at one time a student at the school, Drake said. He didn’t know exactly when he might have attended. Officers entered the first floor of the school building and began clearing it when they heard gunshots on the second level, said Don Aaron, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department. The officers came upstairs and saw the shooter shooting at her, at which point they “attacked” her. Two of the five police officers who responded to the scene fatally shot him, he said.

The shooter entered the Covenant School through a side door and traversed the building, moving from the first floor to the second floor and “firing multiple shots,” Aaron said. The convent is a private Christian school in Nashville for preschool through sixth grade, CBS affiliate WTVF reported. Last year, the school conducted an active shooter training program, the station reported. Special agents from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation were also involved in the response.
Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee said he was “closely monitoring the tragic situation in Covenant” following the shooting, along with state police and highway patrol officers.

We have to do more to stop gun violence,” he continued. “It is tearing our communities apart and tearing at the very soul of the nation.” First lady Jill Biden also acknowledged the school shooting in remarks delivered during the National League of Cities conference, saying she “really has no words.” Our children deserve better,” Biden continued. “We stand, all of us, we stand with Nashville in prayer.”
