Investigators lined up hundreds of bagged white mushrooms in several quadrants along the front yard of the Burlington, Connecticut, home, according to photos provided to PEOPLE by the Connecticut State Police. The raid stemmed from a tip sent to the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Hartford Task Force on Thursday morning, according to WTNH and WFSB. When police asked if they could search the house, which had ventilation equipment similar to that used in other drug factories visible from the outside, Soule allegedly turned detectives away. Police returned later that day with a search warrant, discovering the alleged factory filled with mushrooms in various stages of growth that investigators estimated had a street value of $8.5 million. That’s when police allege Soule admitted that the mushrooms were actually psilocybin, considered a Schedule 1 controlled substance, which is not permitted for medical use and can be easily abused, WFSB reported. Connecticut State Police processed and charged Soule that same day with possession with intent to sell/distribute narcotics and operating a drug factory, according to WTNH and WFSB. Soule, who was being held on a $250,000 cash and surety bond, was scheduled to be arraigned in New Britain Superior Court on Friday, according to media reports.
