Wesley Talakai, 38, a Kiwi father died after being electrocuted on a construction site leaving his wife and two children behind.
Mr. Talakai was delivering lumber to the job site of a house being built on Tauhinu Road in Greenhithe, a northwestern suburb of Auckland, New Zealand, on August 5. Mr. Talakai, originally from Tonga, was helping to unload timber from his truck as a crane operator tried to move the bundles of timber. But the trader was electrocuted when the raised crane accidentally touched the high-voltage power lines on top of Mr. Talakai’s truck during the operation. The owner called emergency services to the construction site, but Mr. Talakai died on the spot. Mr. Talakai leaves behind a wife, Tasha Talakai, and two children, ages 12 and 5.

His funeral is scheduled for next week and the Tongan family will be flying in to attend. The family has also received support from the local Tongan community in Auckland. Lisa McKenzie, who is close friends with Ms. Talakai, reflected on the tragedy. They are the nicest and most loving family. He was so devoted to her and anyone they came in contact with, they were light and kind to everyone, and just like a really sweet family,” she told the New Zealand Herald. “It’s sad for anyone, but heartbreaking for this family because they were so connected.”
Mrs. McKenzie has set up a Givealittle page to support the family which will go towards covering their bills. “Let’s help this beautiful Christian homeschooling family through our donations, which will allow some breathing room, paying to keep a roof over their heads, food, electricity and other basic necessities,” she wrote. WorkSafe has launched an investigation into the incident. The investigation could take up to 12 months.
