Queensland Police confirmed the shocking discovery on Sunday night after 34-year-old Wayne Godinet and the children, who were 11, 10, three and four-year-old twins, were trapped in the fire. The fire was so intense inside the Todman Street property on Queensland’s Russell Island that despite fighting it since 6:18 a.m. on Sunday morning, firefighters were only able to pick up the remains of the house on Sunday afternoon. “After the fire was extinguished this afternoon by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, an initial examination of the scene located the bodies of six people, believed to be a man and five children,” police said. An autopsy and scientific examination will be carried out to confirm the identity of the deceased. Neighbor Angela Dawson told The Courier-Mail that the boys’ mother, Samantha Stephenson, 28, tried to run into the house when the fire broke out, but her father stopped her and ran inside. ‘He told her not to go back in… So she yelled at the neighbors. Now they call her the hero of her, she saved them,” Dawson said. The entire community is devastated, absolutely devastated.”

Another 21-year-old woman escaped the property with Ms. Stephenson and was taken to hospital in stable condition. Russell Island fire: Police Investigation Report
Superintendent Kelly said the cause of the fire was still under investigation. “We are not treating him as a suspect at this stage, preliminary investigations do not suggest that,” he said. Emergency services described the scene as a ‘confrontation’. A local said he heard an “explosion” before seeing black smoke billowing into the sky. “I heard explosions this morning and then I saw the black smoke,” he wrote in a local Facebook group. I am saddened by the whole thing. The fire then spread to two other houses, sending plumes of thick smoke billowing into the sky. One house collapsed while firefighters worked to put out flames in another. About 20 firefighters managed to extinguish the flames in a third home. The Russell Island Rural Fire Brigade first responded to the fire, and then witnesses saw an ambulance and fire trucks from the mainland boarding a barge to the island to help.
