Wallace Hunter, 75, has died from catastrophic injuries sustained while staying at the Pitlochry Hydro Hotel in Perthshire.
The retired precision engineer was trapped in the bath with hot water pouring down on him.Efforts to try and save him were hampered by the bathroom door, which opened outward and was bolted from the inside.The incident took place on December 1, 2019, while Mr. Hunter and his wife were enjoying a weekend away.The cause and circumstances of his death will now be investigated in a fatal accident investigation at Alloa Sheriff’s Court.Special attention will be paid to how the hot water was discharged and the hotel’s health and safety arrangements, as well as its response to the emergency. A preliminary hearing will be held on September 1.Prosecutor Andy Shanks, who is leading the death investigations, said: “The death of Wallace Hunter occurred in circumstances that generated great public concern and, as such, a discretionary fatal accident investigation will take place.”

FAI to probe death of Scots hotel guest in scalding bath
The filing of the First Notice allows the FAI proceedings to be initiated at the direction of the Sheriff.”The family of Wallace Hunter will continue to be kept informed of significant developments as the court proceedings progress.”The FAI will be used to establish facts and not to apportion blame.The father of two children, Mr Hunter had worked as a precision engineer and studied at Stow College in Glasgow.He and his wife Janice had gone to the £160 a night hotel for a short break. The accident happened just before the couple was due to return to their home in Eaglesham, Renfrewshire.Mr. Hunter went to take a bath before they went home and closed the door behind him.It proved impossible to reopen the door after the incident occurred. It is understood that there were no maintenance personnel on site at the time. Yesterday, Ms Hunter declined to comment on the investigation.
The three-star Pitlochry Hydro Hotel is housed in a Victorian building dating back over 130 years. It has 73 rooms and spa facilities.The hotel is popular with tourists due to its proximity to the Blair Atholl Distillery and the heart of Pitlochry.The venue is also used as a wedding venue.In May 2020, the hotel was forced to close its doors after its owner, Specialist Leisure Group, went bankrupt.SLG, which ran the hotel at the time of Hunter’s death, also owned several travel brands, including Caledonian Travels, Bay Hotels and Shearings Holidays.The group was delisted with immediate effect on May 22, 2020.The hotel briefly reopened under new owners Bespoke Hotels in August of that year, but closed again due to lockdown.In April 2021 it reopened in its current form as part of the Costa y Campo Hotel Collective. The group owns 39 hotels across the UK.
