Vladlen Tatarsky, 40, has died after an explosion ripped through a St. Petersburg cafe where he was staying on Sunday. Born in the Donbas, the industrial heart of Ukraine, Tatarsky, whose real name was Max Fomin, began his working life as a coal miner before starting a furniture business. But when he ran into financial difficulties, he decided to rob a bank and was sentenced to prison. He fled custody after a Russian-backed separatist rebellion engulfed Donbas in 2014, weeks after Moscow annexed Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula. Tatarsky later joined separatist rebels and fought on the front lines before becoming a blogger, soon becoming known for his violent statements and fiery pro-war rhetoric.

He was known for his hardline views, criticizing Russian military commanders and Russian President Vladimir Putin for being too soft on his approach.
