Veronica Youngblood, 37, a Virginia woman accused of fatally shooting her two daughters, was found guilty of both murders Wednesday.

She had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, The Washington Post reported. This case goes way beyond just having a mental illness,” Fairfax County Assistant Commonwealth Attorney Kelsey Gill said during closing arguments, according to the Post. “This is way beyond depression. This is way beyond PTSD. This is way beyond being suicidal.” Prosecutors argued that Youngblood murdered her children to get revenge on her ex-husband, who was allegedly scheduled to move out of state with Brooklynn, the Post reported.

Youngblood allegedly bought a gun nine days before the murders and gave her daughters sleeping gums before shooting Brooklynn once in the head and Sharon twice, according to the Post. Before Sharon died, she was able to call 911 and speak to the officers on the scene. She said her mother came into the room and said, ‘I’ll take you to see God,’ and then she shot him,” an officer testified, NBC4 reported. Brooklynn died at the scene.

Youngblood was arrested after she called her ex-husband and left him a voicemail saying she hated him and admitting to the murders, according to NBC4. Youngblood’s lawyer claimed that she had been physically and sexually abused and that she heard voices ordering him to kill her daughters before the murders, reported WTOP. Jurors also found Youngblood guilty of weapons charges. Her lawyer could not be reached for comment.
