Velma Anita Ochieng was a KCSE student from the Rangwe sub-county in Kenya. Velma was enrolled in Kochia, Rangwe’s Nyajanja Co-educational Secondary School, and was scheduled to take an exam this week. She was admitted to the hospital around 5 p.m. on Saturday after showing signs of labor. She passed away at Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital after giving birth.
Velma Anita Ochieng died Monday morning as a result of an oversight by hospital staff, according to her relatives. Ayaga, Velma’s aunt, accused hospital staff members of negligence for failing to care for the student when she was in pain. Peter Ogolla, the hospital’s chief executive, disagreed, stating that the deceased herself had a successful operation and gave birth to a boy.
According to her family, if the doctors had dedicated themselves to her work, she should have given birth successfully. They expected the deceased to be transported to the operating room for a C-section because her pelvic bone had not matured enough to allow her to give birth naturally. However, a medical report indicated that the student was expected to give birth on December 7. The student was very uncomfortable when she was taken to her maternity unit, according to her aunt Selah Ayaga.
Velma Anita Ochieng was 19 years old.
