Tyre Nichols died three days after he was beaten by Memphis police officers, as shown in video released Friday. Authorities released disturbing video footage Friday night showing the beating of Tyre Nichols by five Memphis police officers who are now charged with second-degree murder. The footage, seen by PEOPLE, shows the 29-year-old black FedEx worker being pulled over by Memphis police on January 7 on suspicion of reckless driving.
After the traffic stop, Memphis police said Nichols left the scene on foot and more than one “confrontation” ensued. The City of Memphis posted four videos on its Vimeo site. The videos appear to show police savagely beating Nichols for approximately three minutes. As Nichols falls to the ground, he is punched several times in the head. The officers also used a Taser and pepper spray. After the melee, officers can be seen circling as Nichols is slumped against a car. Nichols was transported to a hospital in critical condition and died three days later.

During a news conference Friday, the family’s attorney, Benjamin Crump, said Nichols wept for his mother with his last words. He calls her mother three times, her last words on this earth are ‘Mom, Mom, Mom,’ he’s screaming for her,” Crump said. “He said, ‘I just want to go home.’ At Friday’s press conference, her mother, RowVaughn Wells, remembered her son as a ‘beautiful soul.’ My son was a beautiful soul. He was a good boy. Nobody’s perfect,” she said, “but he came close.”
Anticipating demonstrations in response to the images, RowVaughn and Nichols’ stepfather, Rodney Wells, urge protesters to be peaceful. “We want peace,” Rodney said. “We don’t want any kind of fuss.
