Troy Driver, 43, “committed suicide by suffocation” in his “maximum security cell” at the Lyon County Jail, the sheriff’s office announced Sunday.
“On August 6, 2023, at 6:17 p.m., officers assigned to the Lyon County Jail were conducting routine hourly cell checks and inmate counts when they discovered an unresponsive inmate,” Sheriff Brad Pope said in a statement. Authorities said both the officers and responding fire department medical personnel attempted to revive Driver with “several rounds” of CPR, but such attempts were unsuccessful and the inmate was soon pronounced dead. Authorities said that weeks earlier, Irion had been waiting in the Fernley-area Walmart parking lot for a shuttle to take her to a nearby Panasonic factory, where she worked in the battery manufacturing department. Authorities said surveillance footage from shortly after 5 a.m. the day of the kidnapping showed that Irion’s car was parked. Authorities alleged that Driver was also a felon in possession of a firearm. After Driver’s death in jail, Sheriff Pope expressed “heartfelt condolences to the Irion family.” “My thoughts and prayers are with you,” he said.
