“USATF is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Tori Bowie, a three-time Olympic medalist and two-time world champion,” USA Track and Field said in a statement. “Her impact on the sport was immeasurable, and she will be greatly missed.” Growing up in Sand Hill, Mississippi, Bowie was lured into the track as a teenager and swiftly progressed through the ranks as a sprinter and long jumper. She attended Southern Miss, where she won the indoor and outdoor long jump NCAA titles in 2011.

Bowie was taken in by her grandmother as an infant after being abandoned at a foster home. She considered herself a basketball player and only unwillingly turned up for track, but Bowie was a quick learner, becoming a state champion in the 100, 200, and long jump before leaving for college. Her first big international medal was a bronze medal in the 100 meters at the 2015 World Championships. After winning, she stated, “My grandmother told me my entire life that I could do whatever I set my mind to.”

Davis earned bronze in the 400-meter hurdles at the Atlanta Games in 1996 and was a member of the US team that won gold in the 4×400-meter relay at the World Indoor Championships in Barcelona in 1995. This story was contributed to by Reuters and The Associated Press.
