Tom Tierney, the former player for the Galwegians and Connacht, as well as a former manager of the Irish women’s team, has died at the age of 46.
In the 1999 Rugby World Cup quarter-final playoffs, Tierney scored a 44-14 victory over Romania as a member of the team that advanced to that stage. He received eight caps over the course of two years, but in 2000, a fellow Limerick native named Peter Stringer defeated him for the starting job. He never played for the national team again.

Career
Tom had a distinguished playing career that spanned from 2004 to 2008 and included stops with Connacht, Galwegians, Richmond, Garryowen, Munster, and Leicester Tigers.
In June 1999, the scrum-half made his international debut for Ireland. He then won eight caps, including four in the 1999 Rugby World Cup, when he scored a try in the team’s Group E win over Romania. After making the switch to the manager, the Limerick native held head coaching roles with the All-Ireland Club XV team, Garryowen, Crescent College Comprehensive SJ, and Cork Constitution.
He had worked for the IRFU since 2014, holding managerial roles with the Ireland Men’s U19 and U20, Women’s 7, and Women’s 15 teams for three years. Among his accolades was the 2015 Women’s Six Nations Championship. Since 2021, he has been working with the Munster Rugby Academy players outside the High-Performance Center as an IRFU National Talent Coach.
