The Broward County Sheriff’s Office said Tironie Sterling, 22, was arrested for the shooting at a suburban Fort Lauderdale Walmart on Tuesday afternoon. Sterling was off the clock when he traveled to the Lauderdale Lakes store at 2 p.m. to meet with a female colleague, according to investigators. The two got into a verbal altercation that turned into a fight in the frozen food department of the shop, with Sterling allegedly dropping a firearm on the floor and attempting to seize the woman’s phone from her hands. According to the arrest report, Sterling demanded access to the woman’s text conversations, but she refused. Sterling allegedly then shoved the woman into the shelves. According to the report, the woman requested assistance, but none of her coworkers responded.

When a male client, named by family members as 41-year-old Thierry Bastien, saw that the woman was being attacked and that no one was present to protect her, he rushed in to aid, and he and Sterling got into a scuffle. During the fight, Sterling allegedly grabbed his gun and shot the good Samaritan several times, striking him in the chest, back, and lower extremities. NBC6 stated that cops later retrieved ten spent 9mm bullet casings at the location. Bastien was in the store with his girlfriend and two of his children, including a baby, according to family members.
Bastien’s girlfriend, Makia Ford, informed the television channel Local10 that she saw her lover shot six times. That’s something I’ll never, ever get over for the rest of my life,” stated the woman. Ford alleged that after Sterling fired the first shot, she begged him to spare Bastien’s life. Senseless violence like this is intolerable, and we’re heartbroken that the customer who intervened in an apparent attack on one of our associates has died from his injuries,” said Walmart spokesperson Charles Crowson in a statement. During this difficult time, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and will continue to work with our associates, providing support as needed.” Sterling has been suspended, according to Crowson, and “steps are being taken to terminate his employment.”
