Timothy Kennedy, 29, the suspect – Authorities say a state police officer was fatally shot Friday in southern West Virginia, and a suspect was later apprehended.

Gov. Jim Justice revealed in a statement that Sgt. Cory Maynard was murdered in the incident and he was “absolutely heartbroken.” He and first lady Cathy Justice both expressed their condolences to Maynard’s family. The brave men and women of law enforcement, as well as all first responders who put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe, are an inspiration to all,” Justice added. Officers responded to a shooting complaint in the Beech Creek region of Mingo County and were met with gunfire upon arrival, according to authorities. Maynard was initially brought to a Logan hospital.

Timothy of Beech Creek was apprehended Friday night after a prolonged search, State Police stated later in a brief statement. There were no further injuries reported, and further information about the shooting was not immediately released. Local residents were told to stay indoors throughout the search, and a Friday night graduation ceremony at Mingo Central High School was canceled.

The incident occurred in the same county where Sheriff Eugene Crum was killed in April 2013 in a Williamson parking lot where he typically parked his car for lunch. A suspect was eventually deemed unable to stand trial and was sentenced to life in a state mental health facility. The epic blood feud between the Hatfield family of West Virginia and the McCoy family of Kentucky is played out in Mingo and neighboring McDowell County. Mingo County was dubbed “Bloody Mingo” during the early twentieth-century coal mine warfare. Ten persons were killed in the “Matewan Massacre,” a 1920 gunfight between miners led by a local police chief and a gang of private security guards paid to evict the miners for organizing a union.
