Tate Rheaume, 20, a Vermont burglary suspect who led police on a high-speed chase before crashing his truck into two police cruisers, killing officer Jessica Ebbighausen, 19, and injuring two others, will be arraigned Monday on charges linked to the collision, according to state police.
Rookie Rutland City Police Officer Jessica Ebbighausen was killed Friday afternoon when she and other police officers were chasing a truck driven by 20-year-old Tate Rheaume who had tried to break into a home, Rutland State Police said. Vermont. Rheaume’s vehicle apparently crossed the center line of the highway and collided head-on with the Ebbighausen patrol car. The truck then collided with another police car. The 19-year-old began working as a part-time officer with the department in May and was set to begin her full-time training at the Vermont Police Academy in August. “We are hurting right now,” Rutland City Police Chief Brian Kilcullen said Friday, according to the Rutland Herald. Ebbighausen had dreamed of becoming a police officer since she was 9 years old and had completed an internship with the department during high school, Kilcullen said. “She always had a smile on her face,” Kilcullen said. “We were looking forward to having her as part of our family. “I’m here today to really mourn the loss of a family member,” he said.
“State police are conducting the investigation. At some point, we will review everything.”The two injured officers were taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. State police said speeding and substance abuse were being investigated as factors in the crash. They could not immediately say if there were criminal cases open against Rheaume or what charges he might face.
