On May 29, Sylvie Bates and Martha Swift, both 16, were walking when they were hit by a Vauxhall Vivaro. Following the tragedy in the Staffordshire village of Whittington, they were rushed to hospital with critical injuries. Sylvie passed away on Wednesday, May 31, and Martha died on Friday, June 2.
Staffordshire Police appealed for any witnesses of the crash. In a joint statement, the families of both girls said: ‘We are devastated by the loss of our beautiful and loving daughters and sisters.’

A police spokesman said the force wants to speak to any witnesses or people with CCTV or dashcam footage of the area at the time. He added: ‘The driver of the Vivaro remained at the scene and assisted officers with inquiries.’ Any witnesses should call Staffordshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 913 of 29 May.
In a joint tribute, the families of both teenagers said: “We are devastated by the loss of our beautiful and loving daughters and sisters. “Please respect our privacy at this difficult time,” the statement added. The force continues to appeal for any witnesses to the collision to come forward. Anyone with relevant CCTV or dashcam footage is asked to contact police.
