The news of Margolin’s passing was announced by his stepson, actor Max Martini on Instagram. He shared a photo of the late actor and wrote, “The two most profound moments in my life…the birth of my children and being by the bedside when my stepdad passed away this morning. My mother, my brother, and I hold his hand.

“All the time between birth and death, life, is up to us to fill with equally profound moments. Still, it made me realize how much time I’ve wasted on things that were never going to amount to anything. Just a deep understanding that I thought I’d share.”

“I love you, Stuart Margolin. A great actor/writer/producer/director. But most importantly, a deeply gifted stepfather who was always there with love and support for his family. RIP Daddy. Keep them cold. ❤️”, added Martini.

Stuart Margolin began his career in the 1960s

Born in 1940 in Davenport, Iowa, and raised in Dallas, Stuart moved to New York during his teens. There he stayed with his brother Arnold, who worked on Broadway. After graduating from high school in 1958, Stuart studied acting at the Pasadena Playhouse in California. He made his acting debut in 1961 on an episode of CBS’s The Gertrude Berg Show. The actor then made cameo appearances on Ensign O’Toole, Burke’s Law, Occasional Wife, The Fugitive, 12 O’Clock High, and The Monkees. In 1970, he played Little Joe in his first major role in the war film Kelly’s Heroes.

He then followed up with The Gambler (1974), Futureworld (1976), and Days of Heaven (1978). Margolin has also directed several made-for-television movies, including The Long Summer of George Adams (1982) and The Glitter Dome (1984). Most recently, he’s starred in 30 Rock, The X-Files, and Arbitrage.

Margolin’s role as Evelyn ‘Angel’ Martin in the 1970s detective drama series The Rockford Files remains his most recognizable work. The actor won two Emmy Awards for his portrayal on the show. Rockford Files star James Garner also frequently collaborated with Margolin, casting him in Nicholas (1971). We did screen tests but couldn’t find what we were looking for until one day I saw a clip from Love, American Style. It wasn’t a scene that should have made me laugh, but the actor was so good that he broke me. I knew he was the one for the role,” Garner wrote in a 2011 memoir of him. Recalling his collaboration with Garner in a 2017 interview, Margolin said, “I was looked up to as a young actor and comedian until I had the option of being on The Mary Tyler Moore Show or on Nichols with Jim Garner. I chose to work with Jim Garner because I thought it would be more fun, which I never regretted.
