A GoFundMe campaign was set up to support Tougher’s pregnant widow, Madison, whom he married just a month ago. The newlyweds were expecting their second child in a matter of weeks. More than 6,000 people donated about $400,000 in the first three days, many of whom worked with or under Tougher’s care. One woman, Amy, said he was one of the attending paramedics who saved her partner’s life just weeks before the alleged stabbing. “While waiting for a hospital bed, Steven sat down with us and shared photos of his recent wedding, talked about his love for his little one and his excitement over his wife’s pregnancy,” she wrote.
Another patient, Yvonne, said that Tougher had recently run. her to hospital in Wollongong: ‘I can’t imagine the pain his family is going through… Fly high, mate.’ A former colleague, Jenna, said she was “blessed” to work alongside the young father. You loved talking about your wife, your child, and your unborn child. Family and friends pay tribute to slain paramedic Steven Tougher
Some recalled his big smile and upbeat energy while working with him at St John’s Cadets as teenagers, while others who worked with him at NSW Ambulance said he was a ‘lovely and loving’ person. Another woman named Amanda said she and her husband are both paramedics and have sat in the same McDonald’s parking lot in Campbelltown “many times.” “I am devastated that this has happened and my heart aches for you Madison, your children, and all of Steven’s family. Steven, your service and sacrifice will never be forgotten,” he wrote. Police allege that Tougher was “completely defenseless” and wedged between Fineanganofo’s car and the ambulance during the alleged attack. Bystanders unsuccessfully tried to intervene and convince the alleged stabber. Finally, the police shot him. Fineanganofo did not appear in Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday, but his lawyer, Javid Faiz, told the court his client would not apply for release.
Court documents indicated that Fineanganofo was diagnosed with psychosis in 2021, but was not put on medication. Mr. Faiz said outside court that his client was aware of the seriousness of the alleged crime, despite his serious mental health problems. His matter will be brought up again in court on June 28. Tougher’s wife Madison, his parents Jillian and Jeff, and his sister Jess released an emotional statement Saturday afternoon. “Steven’s dedication to helping others shined brightest during his work as an NSW Ambulance Paramedic and previously as a nurse,” the family said. “But it wasn’t just his medical expertise that made him exceptional – Steven’s compassion touched many people’s lives. “He had a way of calming fears, offering words of comfort and showing kindness amid chaotic or traumatic events.” The family appreciated the help and support received from the ambulance service and members of the community.
