Steven Docken, 39, died Monday in a shootout with officers at Dino’s Storage near 53rd and Downtown. According to the Omaha police. Two OPD officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries. In a news release, OPD said property managers called 911 around 10:30 p.m. to report that someone was breaking into a unit that was used to store a case of weapons and ammunition.

The Omaha Police Department’s “Officer Involved Investigations Team” is now investigating an exchange of gunfire that left two officers wounded with non-life-threatening injuries and a robbery suspect dead. This morning, the Department says officers with the Bureau of Uniform Patrol responded to the “Dino Storage” at 53rd and Center streets for a robbery in progress around 10:30 p.m. Monday.

Omaha police identify Steven Docken man shot to death in shootout with officers

Property management called the police saying a man was breaking into a first-floor storage unit that had a gun and ammunition case. The officers entered the storage facility with the assistance of property management. Officers attempted to contact the man, later identified as 39-year-old Steven Docken, who was still inside an open storage unit.

When Docken saw the officers, he ran down a hallway as the officers gave chase, loudly ordering him to stop. The officers caught up with the suspect and got into a physical altercation with him. Police say shots were then exchanged between the officers and Steven Docken during the altercation. Both officers were shot in the lower extremities.

Docken was hit several times; Additional arriving officers and Omaha firefighters took action to save the life of the suspect, who died at the scene. Investigators say a firearm was found near Docken. The officers were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and one of them has since been released. Investigators say the incident was captured on both body cameras of the officers involved.

The Nebraska State Patrol and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office are assisting with the investigation. The officers will be interviewed in the coming days and have been placed on paid administrative leave per standard department policy.
