Stephen McHugh, a man was found guilty of murdering a 22-year-old woman after hitting her with a car outside a Shropshire takeout.
Stephen McHugh “used his car as a weapon” to kill Rebecca Steer by driving into a crowd of pedestrians in Oswestry. He had never had a driver’s license. McHugh, 28, told the court that he had six beers and ten double shots of liquor, as well as up to seven lines of cocaine, before the collision at 2.45 a.m. on Sunday, October 9, last year. His automobile jumped the curb outside the Grill Out restaurant in Oswestry and collided with Ms. Steer, an innocent bystander.
She was crushed beneath the car and died as a result of “catastrophic” injuries. McHugh had stopped on the road and exchanged comments with a group of people near the Grill Out, according to prosecutor Kevin Hegarty KC. Mr. Hegarty told the court that McHugh drove through the group after maneuvering, adding, “We say he used his car as a weapon – he used the power and weight of the car to strike the group.”

In Oswestry, a man was convicted guilty of murdering Rebecca Steer, 22, by using an automobile as a weapon

Rebecca Steer was more towards the front of the car, and as the car increased its speed – as it went through the group, she was dragged down under the car,” Mr. Hegarty continued. McHugh confessed manslaughter and assault in court, claiming he was trying to scare the passersby after an earlier confrontation nearby. McHugh was found guilty of murder and attempting to commit grievous bodily harm with intent by an 11-1 majority of jurors at Stafford Crown Court. McHugh, originally from Liverpool but living near Oswestry at the time of the attack, swore and walked rapidly out of the dock before a judge on the second charge was returned. Following the trial, it was revealed that he had previous convictions for drugs and the seizure of a sawn-off shotgun in Merseyside in 2019.
“Rebecca Adelaide Steer, Becca to us, Becky to everyone else, was a pure joy to have as a daughter/sister and we all feel lucky to have had her in our lives, but we will always feel robbed,” the victims family said in a statement. We all get to live a life, but her life was taken from her by a few seconds of someone else’s stupidity through no fault of her own.” Becca was 22 in our hearts and will always be 22 in our hearts, beautiful and amazing.” This was a horrendous attack that tragically robbed an innocent young woman of her life while she was enjoying a night out with friends,” West Mercia Police Detective Chief Inspector Mark Bellamy said after the conviction.
