Stella Stevens, a leading lady in 1960s and 1970s sitcoms perhaps best known for playing Jerry Lewis’s object of affection in “The Nutty Professor,” has died. Her son told the Hollywood Reporter that he had been in hospice for some time with Alzheimer’s disease.
She is also remembered for her role in the action movie The Poseidon Adventure. Stevens has also worked on television, on shows like Murder She Wrote and Magnum, P.I. Her friend and her manager, Maria Calabrese, said: “It was an honor and a privilege to have worked with Stella, who was one of the most wonderful and talented people.”
Born in Yazoo City, Mississippi, in 1938 as Estelle Caro Eggleston, she married electrician Noble Herman Stevens at age 16 and gave birth to her first and only child, Andrew. Two years later, she divorced and began modeling and acting.

The Nutty Professor and the Star of Poseidon Adventure
20th Century Fox hired her after they discovered her performing at her college in Memphis, Tennessee. The studio later dropped her, but Paramount hired her instead. Stevens won a Golden Globe for her 1959 film debut as a showgirl in Say One for Me, which also starred Bing Crosby and Debbie Reynolds.
In Girls! Girls! Girls!, starring opposite Presley in 1962, she Stevens said she didn’t like the script, but Paramount told her she was contractually bound to do it. She had been promised that she would star in Too Late Blues opposite Oscar-winning 1950s heartthrob Montgomery Clift, but Clift was later replaced in the film.
In one of her most memorable roles, the 1963 sci-fi comedy The Nutty Professor, Stevens played a student of Jerry Lewis’s socially awkward college professor.
Desperate to impress her, he concocts a potion to transform himself into a charismatic hunk. Stevens also played one half of a newly married couple in The Poseidon Adventure, a shipwreck movie that became one of the biggest box office hits of 1972. Her character met a grisly end.
Stevens modeled for Playboy several times and was Playmate of the Month for January 1960. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Stevens worked steadily on television, also appearing in Hart to Hart, The Love Boat, and Wonder Woman, where she played a Nazi judo champion who thought she could take on the titular heroine of Lynda Carter.
She also directed two films: The American Heroine (1979) and The Ranch (1989), starring her son. Stevens’ second husband and partner of 37 years, rock guitarist Bob Kulick, died in May 2020.
Her brother, Bruce, a former guitarist for the US band Kiss, tweeted: “Legendary actress Stella Stevens, my brother’s longtime partner, passed away this morning due to a long illness. “She finally met up with Bob today.”
