Sewwandi Diyawinnage, 32, was on holiday with her partner Eshan Tharaka Koottage when she was allegedly stabbed to death on September 9. It is understood an argument broke out between the pair before Koottage allegedly stabbed her. He surrendered to police before officers discovered his wife’s lifeless body next to a blood-stained knife at the Holiday Inn Express Singapore Katong. Diyawinnage was studying chemistry at La Trobe University in Melbourne and she met her husband during a quick getaway to Singapore. She had told her friends that she was excited to see him again after living away from him for over a year. Mr. Koottage was charged with murder, a crime punishable by death.

Elizabeth Campher, Diyawinnage’s classmate, said Diyawinnage had not seen her husband in more than a year. “He was working in Sri Lanka while she was studying here,” she said. “It was the first time they had seen each other in over a year, so she was very excited to go on vacation with him.” Mrs Diyawinnage was described as “warm and genuine”. “She was a friend to many and she always had kind words and a smile to give,” Campher said. “It didn’t matter who she was, she always asked everyone how they were doing, she always had a genuine personal interest in people.” She got top grades and she was happy to help people with difficult chemistry questions. “She really had a lot of potential, it’s just devastating.” La Trobe University held a tribute to Ms Diyawinnage on Monday. “We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of one of our students, Sewwandi Diyawinnage, while she was on holiday in Singapore,” a spokesperson said ‘Our thoughts and condolences are with her family and we have been in regular contact with them, as well as her fellow students and colleagues at La Trobe. “The university has been providing welfare support and other assistance while her family and friends grieve.”
