Serif Zorba, 32, was arrested and charged with attempted murder and weapon possession after reportedly stabbing Imam Sayed Elnakib, 65, at Paterson’s Omar Mosque on Sunday morning.
The incident occurred at 5.30 a.m. on Sunday. The mosque’s security camera filmed some of the horrifying attacks. While other believers were kneeling for prayers, Zorba walked forward with a knife. Following the stabbing, mosque members were able to seize and subdue Zorba while waiting for authorities to arrive.
‘The culprit was captured as a result of the brave acts of Omar Mosque’s members,’ said Abdul Hamdan, the mosque’s spokesperson. ‘They captured the individual quickly and without hesitation.’ Zorba had previously attended the Paterson, New Jersey mosque, but is not a member of the congregation, according to authorities. Elnakib is in stable condition at St Joseph’s University Medical Center, according to Paterson City Councilmember Al Abdel-Aziz, and is expected to fully recover.

If convicted, he may face up to 20 years in prison. Paterson, New Jersey’s third-biggest city, also has one of the highest communities of American Muslims. Paterson police said that they would beef up security at the city’s 12 mosques for the duration of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
