Sergeant Graham Saville, 46, has died the police hero who was struck by a train while trying to save a distraught man on the tracks.
Sergeant Graham Saville suffered serious injuries after being called to a residential area in Balderton, near Newark-on-Trent, around 7 p.m. Thursday out of fear for the safety of a man. While trying to help the man, the sergeant was struck by a passing train. He was taken to hospital but, despite the best efforts of medical staff, the officer died at Queen’s Medical Center, with his family by his side, police announced tonight. The 29-year-old man saved by the agent was also taken to the hospital, where he remains, after suffering non-life-threatening electrocution injuries. The flags of the entire force will now fly at half mast in respect to the sergeant who was hailed as a “hugely respected and popular colleague” whose “sacrifice will never be forgotten.” Police Chief Kate Meynell said: “Today is a day of mourning for the entire police family. ‘Graham was a highly respected and popular colleague and his death in the line of duty has been a huge shock to all of us.
‘Our hearts and deepest condolences go out to his family and we will do everything we can to support them at this unimaginably devastating time. “It is impossible to put into words how devastating this news is to everyone who loved and respected Graham.” She and she added: “On Thursday he went to work to protect the people of Nottinghamshire from harm, and it is a testament to his bravery and dedication as a police officer that he was fatally injured while trying to save the life of another man”. ‘His service and sacrifice of him will never be forgotten. ‘I would also like to pay tribute to the officers who came to the scene, some of whom provided immediate medical assistance while the ambulance was on its way. Graham Saville Death: Investigation Report
British Transport Police are currently leading an investigation into the incident, which they said occurred on the line near Newark Northgate station. Deputy Chief Constable Allan Gregory said: “This is truly devastating news and on behalf of everyone at the British Transport Police I would like to offer my deepest condolences to the family of Sergeant Saville and our colleagues at Nottinghamshire Police.” ‘BTP detectives are conducting a full and thorough investigation to establish all the circumstances of what occurred last week. ‘We are still in the early stages of this investigation and will work closely with the Coroner’s Office as it progresses. “It’s one of the darkest days in law enforcement when an officer is lost in the line of duty, and Sgt. Police Minister Chris Philp posted on X, formally known as Twitter: “I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Sergeant Graham Saville, following his courageous work to save the life of another on a railway line. He selflessly did the utmost sacrifice. We will remember. Our thoughts are with Graham’s family and colleagues.” Meanwhile, the head of the Police College, Police Chief Andy Marsh, said after the death of Sgt Graham Saville: “This is news devastating and my thoughts and condolences are with the family, friends and colleagues of this brave officer at this sad time.”
“It is a tragic reminder of the risks and bravery our officers and police personnel show every day to keep the public safe.” Announcing the death of Sergeant Saville this afternoon, the force wrote on Twitter: “It is with great sadness that Nottinghamshire Police confirm the death of an officer on duty in the line of duty for him.” The sergeant’s family has requested privacy at this time. A JustGiving fund, started by ex-police officer Dan Fletcher, who lives a mile away from the site, had previously raised more than £60,000.
Before the sergeant’s death, Mr Fletcher wrote on the page: “This is an appeal to the community to help the injured police officer and his family after an ordeal in which he sustained life-altering injuries on duty. duty while saving another person’s life.
