Sam Dickson, the brother of New Zealand rugby union player Joshua “Josh” McKenzie Dickson and the son of former Arks player Alex Dickson, died. Sam Dickson died on May 25, 2023, at the age of 24. Sam fought for a long time before passing away last night in the presence of his family. During this difficult moment, his family is in our thoughts and prayers.

The Otago University Rugby Football Club stated in response to the death of famed rugby player Sam Dickson, saying, “It is with a heavy heart that today we bid farewell to Sam Dickson, Sam fought a long battle and sadly passed away last night.” During this difficult time, the Dickson family has our warmest support and prayers from the club and community.

Josh most recently played lock for Otago in New Zealand’s National Provincial Championship (NPC) and the Highlanders in the international Super Rugby competition. Sam was a former New Zealand school and Otago representative flanker. He was a talented flanker who recently played club rugby for Otago University. Dickson died of cancer after a long struggle. The family will publicize Sam Dickson’s death and funeral arrangements at a later date. After his death was announced, tributes poured in on social media. Friends and family members have sent heartfelt condolence messages to him.

Otago Boys’ High School has been advertised. It’s a sad day for our school after learning that ex-pupil Sam has died. We remember Sam fondly, as well as Sam’s brother and old boy Josh, who was a Housemaster in our Hostel, and Sonya, who worked in our Hostel and school kitchen. At this difficult time, our thoughts and prayers are with the Dickson family. Sam, may you rest in peace.
