Ryan Ashley Darken, a man who allegedly abducted a nine-year-old girl in broad daylight while on her way to school has been identified.
Ryan Ashley Darken, 37, was charged on Saturday with a series of disturbing offenses in connection with the alleged kidnapping of the girl when he clashed at Northbridge Magistrates Court in Northbridge, Western Australia. Charges include arresting another person with intent to prevent/hinder a person from performing an act, imprisonment, and threatening to commit an illegal act. Darken kept his head down during the brief court proceedings, responding only to confirm his name and the charges, The West Australian reports. His charges were read aloud by Magistrate Brian Gluestein due to the “gravity” of the crimes. Darken allegedly lured the nine-year-old girl into a silver van near a Warnbro elementary school around 8:45 a.m. m. of Friday. A parent at the school allegedly noticed the girl getting into the van and reported it to the school, prompting a major police operation. A short time later, staff found the girl distraught and crying in a nearby supermarket. Witnesses claimed that she was barefoot and had her hands tied with zip ties. Darken was later arrested and taken to the Rockingham Police Station. WA Police released footage of the moment officers arrested the shopkeeper who was driving what was allegedly the car in which the boy was taken away.

He is seen leaning against a pickup truck as officers radioed that they had a “suspect in custody.” Acting Inspector Scott Johnson, of the sex crimes division, praised the father who first reported the alleged incident. “That’s probably one of the main reasons this got resolved — a parent who realizes something wasn’t right, sees a kid get into a car almost to school, and reports it right away — it’s paramount,” he said. “It’s one of those things that parents need to have that tough conversation with kids about stranger danger and talk to someone or go to someone or do anything online.” Forensic officers were also seen at a bush location believed to be related to the alleged abduction. WA Premier Roger Cook described the trader’s alleged crimes as “dirty and depraved”. “I don’t think words can describe my utter disgust and loathing, or that of the WA community, for these activities,” he told a news conference on Saturday morning. “Our hearts go out to that girl, to the family and to the police involved in this important work.” Darken has worked for Abel Patios and Roofing and as a Wildcat operator in the past, according to the jobs he listed on his numerous social media profiles. His father confirmed that his son had appeared in court, but had no further comment Saturday. Darken was taken into custody without bail. He will appear before Rockingham Magistrates Court on September 4.
