Rupiah Begum, 42, the distraught mother of a 13-year-old boy who allegedly stabbed and seriously injured his older sister at their Queens home on Sunday, said she doesn’t understand what happened to her typically friendly son.
A 13-year-old boy is facing assault charges for allegedly stabbing his 14-year-old sister multiple times inside the family’s home in Jamaica, New York. The incident took place around 7 pm on Saturday, March 11 at 111th Avenue and 156th Street. An eight-year-old boy was also home when his older sister was stabbed. According to ABC7, police officers found the girl with stab wounds to her arms, legs, and face. According to the report, the boy initially claimed that he called 911 and that there was a robber. However, he confessed to stabbing his sister after being arrested.

The teens’ parents were not home when the incident occurred. However, later on, Sunday, March 12, the 42-year-old mother of the suspect and victim, Rupiah Begum, who works at McDonald‘s, told the New York Post: “I wasn’t home. They called me. An emergency at the job .” While her husband, who according to neighbors owns a taxi service and is also a taxi driver, is traveling in Bangladesh. The mother said, “I don’t know what happened. Usually, everything is fine. They play together. Usually, there are no problems.” The mother-of-five further added that her son was “scared” while her daughter remained at Jamaica Hospital with multiple stab wounds. “She said something was wrong. She said that she was angry. She stabbed her in multiple places, multiple times. I don’t know what happened,” the mother shared.
Why did the boy attack his sister?
The teenager told police that his sister was “harassing” him. One of the neighbors told the New York Post that the boy is autistic. The individual, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “He yells a lot and there’s, you know, there’s a lot of yelling. They came here three years ago. Best neighbors we’ve ever had. Never a problem.” He added: “It’s terrible what happened. My wife was very upset last night. The whole block was in shock. All the flashing red lights and the police, and it was just terrible.”
