Governor Degamo did not deserve that kind of death

Roel Degamo, governor of Negros Oriental province, and five other people were killed in the shooting, his widow said.

“Governor Degamo did not deserve that kind of death. He was serving his constituents on a Saturday,” Janice Degamo, who is also the mayor of Pamplona, said in a video posted on Facebook. Police said in a statement Saturday that the conditions of the hospitalized victims were unknown.

Degamo, 56, is the latest to be attacked in a long history of attacks on politicians in the Philippines, and is at least the third to be shot since last year’s local elections.

President Ferdinand Marcos condemned what he described as the “assassination” of political ally Degamo and vowed swift justice for his killers. Last month, the Supreme Court declared Degamo the rightful winner of the Negros Oriental gubernatorial race after a recount that ousted his local rival, who had previously been proclaimed the victor.

Career

In 2010, he was elected as a Provincial Member of Negros Oriental, garnering the highest votes in his province’s 3rd Legislative District. Later, he assumed the position of Lieutenant Governor after the then Lieutenant Governor of Negros Oriental, Agustín Perdices, succeeded the then Governor Emilio Macías II, who died of liver cancer in June 2010.

Degamo finally became governor in January 2011 after Partridges also passed away.

After completing the terms of Macías and Perdices, Degamo ran for governor of his province in 2013. At the time, his party, PDP-Laban, was neither as powerful nor influential as it is today, but Degamo managed to win against his opponents from big parties like the Nationalist Popular Coalition and the then ruling party, the Liberal Party.

Degamo won all four of his gubernatorial bids: 2013, 2016, 2019 and 2022. He ran under the banner of the National Unity Party in 2016 and under the Nationalist Party in 2019 and 2022.

The slain governor entered politics in 1998 after being elected as a Siatown city councilor, serving in the same position until 2007. Degamo served as president of the Philippine League of Councilors (PCL)-Negros Oriental Chapter from 2004 to 2007. He was later elected President of PCL Central Visayas.
