The coroner’s office identified the man and woman Thursday as Rodney Helman, 54, and Elaine Helman, 51. His last known address was in Vandalia, an Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations (BCI) spokesperson confirmed to News Center 7 on Thursday afternoon.Cops shot Rodney and Elaine, who are accused of hijacking a semi-truck in Madison County and holding the driver hostage during a multi-county chase that ended at Dayton International Airport Access Road. Both were taken to Miami Valley Hospital. It was there that Elaine died from her injuries. Rodney was originally listed in critical condition, however state police said he later died of his injuries. The incident started around 1 a.m. when London police tried to stop traffic in the couple’s vehicle. As an officer made the stop, they drove away. Police Chief Glenn Nicol said they drove to a truck stop on the outskirts of London.Once at the truck stop, the couple got out of their vehicle and started running. When an officer tried to electrocute them, Rodney pointed a gun at the office.

They then stole a Werner semi with the driver inside. As they were driving away, the truck collided with a London police patrol car.Law enforcement pursued them in the semi through Clark, Greene, Madison, and Montgomery counties before ending up near Dayton International Airport just before 3:30 a.m. m. From there, negotiations with Rodney and Elaine began.OSHP’s Special Response Team (SRT) was also called to the scene at this time.About 4 hours later, around 7:30 AM. m., members of the SRT approached the truck to try to get the victim out, according to OSHP Lt. Nathan Dennis. At that time, Dennis said that one of the two fired at the SRT members. The soldiers returned fire, hitting both of them.The hostage was removed from the truck and had minor injuries.A BCI spokesperson confirmed to News Center 7 on Wednesday morning that they have been asked to investigate the shooting.It is not currently known if any officers are on administrative leave pending the investigation into the shooting.The access road to the Dayton International Airport remained closed between Interstate 70 and US 40, but has since been reopened.
