Robert Adams, a teenage driver texted his mother, ‘I’m sleepy,’ only minutes before being killed in a car accident.
Robert, 19, a Kwik Fit tyre fitter from Colwyn Bay, was driving along the A55 in North Wales when his Vauxhall Astra collided with the back of a lorry travelling in the same direction. Adams was declared dead at the scene when his automobile became jammed beneath the trailer, which was carrying 13 tonnes of cheese. The dashcam footage seized from the teenager shows the events leading up to the crash. It was later shown before an inquest in Ruthin attended by members of his family.
His family said he had a golden heart and always wanted to serve others. They also claimed that he was overjoyed with his recent job rise. Lorraine Lansbury, his mother, stated in a statement read at the trial that her son had spent the previous afternoon with the family at a fair before going to Deiniolen, near Caernarfon, to see his girlfriend Shannon Williams. He called her at 1.25 a.m. to say he was on his way home and that he was sleepy. He also showed her a photo of himself on cruise control at Talybont, staying within the temporary 40mph zone.

Robert Adams Killed, Know How He Died in an Accident
The accident happened nine minutes later on the A55’s eastbound carriageway at Dwygyfylchi. The Volvo lorry’s driver, James Boyce, told police that he was slowing down as he approached the 30mph zone when the collision occurred, and his tachometer proved that he was travelling at 29.2mph. ‘I assumed I had a flat tyre,’ he explained. Gerald Hobson, the van driver, stated he was going at roughly 50-60mph when Adams’ Astra passed him when the national speed limit was 70mph.
He then noticed the automobile weaving between the two eastbound lanes before being corrected and hitting the nearside kerb. Shannon Williams said in a statement that her boyfriend informed her he was tired and that she noticed him yawning before he left for Trem y Ffair near Kinmel Bay. On each car, no mechanical flaws were discovered. Senior coroner for North Wales East and Central, John Gittins, recorded a conclusion of death in a road traffic collision. I don’t believe for a second that he did it on purpose. ‘It was just because he was sleepy,’ he explained.
