Riley Hedley and Mikey Easton died on Sunday night March 12 in a crash on the A196 ear Coopies Way in Morpeth, Northumberland. They were reportedly friends and “never parted ways.” Their sudden deaths have left their families devastated.
In a statement, Northumbria Police said: “Sadly, two teenagers lost their lives following a collision in the Morpeth area, and we are asking for witnesses to come forward. Just after 00:40 today we received a report of a collision on the A196 near Coopies Way. Emergency services responded to the scene but unfortunately, despite the best efforts of paramedics, two teenagers, ages 17 and 16, died at the scene.”

“Both families are currently being supported by specialist officers at this tragic time. An investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision. We are now appealing to any witnesses, especially anyone who may have dash cam footage, to come forward. Our thoughts are with the families of the youth and those close to them as they try to come to terms with today’s devastating news. We will support them in any way we can and ask that the privacy of both families be respected,” the statement added.

Heartbreaking tributes from the families and friends
The double tragedy has drawn heartbreaking tributes from the families and friends of the young people. “The hardest post flies high my beautiful boy…totally broken, devastated, I hope you are at peace, my little angel, mommy, and daddy love you so much. RIP Mikey Easton RIP Riley Hedley has taken too soon…they never broke up and then got together too soon,” Mikey’s father said, The Mirror reported.
Mikey’s sister Ebony Easton posted on Facebook: “RIP Riley and Mikey❤️ I can’t believe you’re gone it doesn’t feel real we miss you so much already honestly don’t know what to say. I’m still so surprised you’re gone, but we had some great times and even better memories.”
She also shared, “I grew up with you by my side always, even if we weren’t always on the best of terms, but you were always there for me no matter what you were, you were the best little brother anyone could ask for. I love you a lot. I am devastated by what happened and you will never meet your little nephew, he would have loved you so much, I hope you are resting well 💖”.
An acquaintance of the victims, Sadie Charlton, stated: “Rest in peace Mikey Easton most devastating news you will be missed by so many my heart goes out to his family and everyone who knew him, hope everyone is doing well, he was an amazing boy with a heart of gold, I can’t believe you’re gone. ❤️❤️ Also rest in peace Riley Hedley, I didn’t know him but I saw him a few times and he seemed like a nice guy. Sending love to the family of both children, they will both be a great strangers. It’s heartbreaking that these two boys were taken away too soon.”
Added Emily Makepeace: “My heart goes out to the family and friends of Riley Hedley and Mikey Easton, both crafty young men and it still doesn’t feel real, they’re both gone and it feels so surreal I spoke to them both on Saturday night. . taken too soon and I can’t believe what the family and friends of these two young men are going through right now and I hope they are all getting the help and support they need and deserve 💙💙.”
Meanwhile, a GoFundMe has been started for the families of the teens. The fundraiser said: “Sadly on 12/03/2023 we lost two of our close friends Riley and Mikey they were two very dear boys and best friends they both tragically passed away in a car accident together and that left a huge impact on all of us and your family. My heart goes out to both families at this time, as a community at times like this we should all come together and try to support the families of the two boys. All funds will be donated for funeral costs.”
