Richard Wakeling, 55, of Brentwood, Essex, fled the country on the eve of his trial in January 2018. In his absence, he was convicted of attempting to smuggle £8 million in amphetamines in 2016 and sentenced to 11 years in jail in April 2018. Wakeling appeared in Chelmsford Crown Court on Friday and was promptly imprisoned, according to the National Crime Agency.
Officers brought Wakeling back to Heathrow on Thursday, according to the NCA. Wakeling was arrested by the Royal Thai Police in February while on his way to pick up his automobile after it had been repaired. “Richard Wakeling believed that by fleeing the UK, he could avoid facing justice,” said Jacque Beer, the NCA’s regional head of investigations. “However, the hard work of NCA officers – both here in the UK and abroad – and our international partners has resulted in him serving a lengthy prison sentence.” This case demonstrates the NCA’s global reach and our commitment to holding those who commit serious and organized crime accountable for their actions, no matter how long it takes or how far they flee.”

Furniture transportation
In April 2016, his organized crime gang was probed after plastic drums containing cocaine were discovered on a lorry going to board a Channel Tunnel train. The driver was moving furniture from Italy when he stopped in Belgium, where phone data suggested he was told to pick up the drugs, according to the NCA.
Wakeling organized the entire importation, contacting drug suppliers in the Netherlands and coordinating the travel with two other UK offenders. Officers discovered that the crime syndicate had organized six earlier importations prior to the 2016 seizure. In 2018, three more guys were imprisoned for their roles in cocaine smuggling.
