Ricardo Castro was traveling at speeds up to 95 mph on a street with a 25 mph speed limit during school hours on November 3, 2021, and collided with a left-turning Mercedes in South Gate County of the Angels. District Attorney George Gascón said at a news conference Wednesday. The crash killed 12-year-old Isaiah Rodriguez, who was in the passenger seat of the Mercedes. His then 19-year-old sister, who was behind the wheel, suffered serious injuries.
Castro and his passenger were also injured in the crash, authorities said. In addition to the murder charge, Castro faces charges of vehicular manslaughter and reckless driving causing serious bodily injury. Gascón said Castro had previously been involved in multiple accidents and received several traffic tickets, including for speeding. Just three months before the fatal crash, Castro was a passenger in another fatal accident.

Los Angeles County deputy sheriff charged with murder in off-duty crash that killed 12-year-old Isaiah Rodriguez in South Gate
Los Angeles’ chief prosecutor accused the police officer of showing “conscious disregard” for the lives of children by driving nearly four times the speed limit. Gascón argued that, as a law enforcement officer who had undergone extensive training, Castro should have known better than to speed through a busy intersection in a school zone. Sir. Castro’s recklessness ended the life of a child with a whole future ahead of him and destroyed a family,” the prosecutor said. “This tragedy was preventable and should never have happened.
At the press conference, Isaiah’s grieving mother, Betsabe Suarez, said the family is “completely broken” by his death, KABC-TV reported. Suárez said that on the day of the accident, her son was going to a store to buy a ruler for a friend who had hers taken by thugs. The mother also revealed that just three days earlier, her 12-year-old son had decided to be baptized.
“I love you, Isaiah, and I miss you every day,” Suárez said.
