Rhys Bennett, A man who raped and murdered a mother of two has been sentenced to at least 24 years in prison.
Jill Barclay, 47, was assaulted as she walked home from a night out in Aberdeen. Her burned-out body was discovered in the city’s Dyce neighborhood in the early hours of September 17, last year. Rhys Bennett, 23, of Ballingry, Fife, pleaded guilty at Edinburgh’s High Court on Wednesday. Bennett acknowledged rape and murder, as well as seeking to thwart the goals of justice by destroying evidence to conceal his crimes. The laborer was sentenced to life in jail with a minimum of 24 years in prison and was placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely.
Ms. Barclay was described as a “deeply loved life partner, mother, and daughter” while working as a projects engineer for energy giant Petrofac. Her family stated, “We would like to thank family, friends, and the community for their comforting support following Jill’s tragic death as we have waited for justice.”Jill was adored as a life partner, mother, and daughter. She didn’t deserve to die that day, let alone in such an ugly, terrible manner. “This man has taken so much away from us and changed our lives forever.”

Fife man who burned mother of two alive in ‘unimaginably wicked’ attack jailed
Prosecutor Lorraine Glancy KC told the court that forensic evidence revealed Ms. Barclay was alive at the time she was set on fire. “Your crimes against Ms. Barclay were unimaginably wicked and indeed heinous,” Lord Arthurson said in sentencing, Bennett. According to Detective Superintendent Andrew Patrick, who oversaw the investigation, Bennett was traced back to Fife through investigations that included CCTV analysis. The “senseless and brutal” murder was reported to have had a “significant impact on the local community” as well as the rest of the country’s northeast.
“This was a particularly harrowing investigation,” DS Patrick remarked, “and it deeply affected everyone involved.”I am relieved that Bennett will now face the consequences of his heinous and evil actions.” Ms. Barclay should have arrived home safely, according to David Green, lead homicide prosecutor for the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS). He went on to say, “This senseless and brutal crime has devastated a family and shocked the wider community.”While we applaud today’s punishment as justice being served, we are acutely aware that no sentence can ever adequately reflect the suffering of Jill Barclay’s loved ones. “Our thoughts remain with them.”
