Rex Heuermann Wiki – Rex Heuermann Biography

Rex Heuermann, 59, was arrested at his home on 1st Ave. in Massapequa Park, multiple sources told The Post. The suspect is due to appear in court in hours, according to another source who did not confirm the identity.

He is being examined by the so-called “Gilgo Four”, women found wrapped in burlap days apart since late 2010, and not by the six others later deemed possibly connected, the source said. Multiple sources first confirmed the arrest to News 12 Long Island, which said First Avenue in Massapequa Park was “just swamped with cops.” Suffolk County and state police, both on the scene since early morning, did not officially confirm the arrest Friday. News 12 did not identify the suspect or detail what led to the breakthrough in what it called “one of the most intense and prolific manhunts for a serial killer.” Fears of a serial killer were raised when the body of 24-year-old Melissa Barthelemy was found along Ocean Parkway on December 11, 2010, with the remains of three other women found in the days that followed.

The so-called “Gilgo Four”—Barthelemy along with Megan Waterman, 22, Amber Lynn Costello, 27, and Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25—were found whole, wrapped in burlap about a tenth of a mile from each other on the beach. By the spring of 2011, the number of bodies had risen to 10: eight women, as well as an unidentified man and a young child. The bodies were found during the search for missing Jersey City sex worker Shannan Gilbert, whose body was not found until December 2011, a year after the Giglo Four. John Ray, a lawyer for Gilbert’s family, told News 12 that he “had a very strong, credible lead that they were about to close an arrest” about a week ago.

However, he confirmed that he had not heard officially from the investigators, whom he had not heard from for “several months. “We’re pleased if they really managed to find someone who can be tagged for this,” said Ray, who also represents the family of Jessica Taylor, 20, another of the dead women who was not part of the initial four. “We’re glad something is finally happening because we’ve been frustrated.” Friday’s arrest came after the new Suffolk County Police Commissioner created a homicide task force in Gilgo Beach in February of last year. It included help from the state police, local sheriffs, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, and the FBI. “I believe this case is solvable and identifying the person or persons responsible for these murders is a priority,” Commissioner Rodney Harrison, a former NYPD department chief, said at the time.
