Gunfire erupted around 5:15 p.m. Tuesday outside Altria Theater in downtown Richmond, Virginia, as a crowd of graduates and their families were filing out of the venue. Police said seven people were struck with bullets, leaving two dead and five wounded.
A 31-year-old sustained life-threatening injuries. Four others, ages 14, 42, 55, and 58, suffered gunshot wounds but were expected to recover. At least 12 people were hurt in the chaos, or required treatment for anxiety. Jackson’s 9-year-old sister was reportedly hit by a car in the mayhem triggered by the shooting, but she has since been released from the hospital, according to ABC News.

A 19-year-old suspect tried to flee on foot but was arrested and will be charged with two counts of second-degree murder. Moments later, some 20 or more gunshots ring out, sending hundreds of panicked bystanders — including graduates still wearing their caps and gowns — running for their lives.

Winsome Earle-Sears, a staunch Second Amendment supporter, told reporters near the scene that the problem isn’t guns, but criminals. “Even if you took all the guns off the street, from law-abiding citizens, the others who mean harm, who mean to kill and mayhem, they’re going to have the guns,” she explained. “As a result, we need to figure out what’s going on in our communities.” We need to locate the appropriate problem before we can find the proper answer.”
