Reed Messer, a former Delaware middle school teacher who left the school nine years ago, has been arrested on numerous counts of rape against a student. Reed Messer, 42, was arrested at her home in Greenville, South Carolina, and was extradited to Delaware on Monday, May 8, according to police.
The Delaware State Police received a report from the Division of Family Services in December 2022 accusing an ex-educator at Wilmigton’s Stanton Middle School of having a sexual encounter with a student about a decade ago. According to CBS News, the nearly two-month-long sexual relationship began in October 2014.
Messer was arrested on April 26 after officials in South Carolina acquired an arrest order for her. The former teacher is accused of ten counts of fourth-degree rape, ten instances of third-degree rape, and two acts of sexual abuse of a minor by a person in a position of trust. Messer is currently being imprisoned at Delaware’s women’s jail on a $310,000 bail.

“Due to the sensitivity of this case and in consideration of the victim,” officials stated, “only limited information will be released.” According to officials, the alleged abuser has been out of work at the Red Clay Consolidated School District, including Stanton Middle School, since November 2014. After leaving Delaware, Messer enrolled in Legacy Early College in Greenville, South Carolina.
According to the state’s Department of Education website, Messer got her initial certification as a teacher in South Carolina in July 2015 for special education, English, middle-level language arts, and elementary and early childhood education. Authorities said in a report, “Due to the serious nature of these allegations of misconduct, Ms. Messer may pose a threat to the health, safety, and welfare of students, who may be under her instruction, and that emergency action is required.”
