Rapper Coolio, 59, passed away as a result of fentanyl and other substances, according to a coroner’s report. The 59-year-old celebrity passed away in September at a friend’s house in Los Angeles. He was best known for his 1995 track Gangsta’s Paradise. His manager, Jarez Posey, claimed that the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office had told the rapper’s family on Thursday that he had passed away from a fentanyl overdose. A strong synthetic opioid called fentanyl is used to alleviate severe pain, especially that experienced before and after surgery.

The coroner determined that the death was unintentional and added the effects of heroin and methamphetamine to the list of possible causes. Asthma and a kind of heart disease called cardiomyopathy were listed as contributing factors. Coolio, who was born in Pennsylvania in 1963, moved to Compton, California, where he started performing in the West Coast hip-hop scene. In 1994, he launched his debut album, It Takes A Thief, and the song Lakeside became a top 10 smash. The hit song Gangsta’s Paradise, which was used in the movie Dangerous Minds, was released the next year.
The following year, the song, which had topped the singles charts in the US, UK, Europe, and Australia, took home a Grammy for best rap solo performance. According to his website, he sold over 17 million records during his career and received five further Grammy nominations. In addition to performing music, Coolio appeared in several TV shows and movies, placing third in the sixth season of Channel 4’s Celebrity Big Brother in 2009. His manager stated that his kids intended to honor their dad in upcoming documentaries and movies.
