Ralph Yarl, a black adolescent, was shot in the head on Thursday night after ringing the incorrect doorbell while trying to pick up his siblings at a home in Kansas City, Missouri, police said. Ralph Yarl, 16, was supposed to pick up the siblings at around 10:30 p.m. on N.E. 115th Terrace, but instead went to N.E. 115th Street and was confronted with gunshots at the door, according to Kansas City police. Yarl had life-threatening injuries from the bullets and was brought to the hospital on Sunday night, where he was recovering. The homeowner who shot the weapon was apprehended and freed after 24 hours.

According to Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves, the Clay County prosecutor’s office is ready to take up the investigation as detectives gather evidence. “We recognize the frustration this can cause with the entire criminal justice process,” Graves explained.”As soon as the case is complete, it will be presented to Clay County prosecutors for their review. “Officially, the incident has been ruled a case of mistaken identity. Graves stated that forensic proof and a victim statement are required before the case can be closed.

Faith Spoonmore, Yarl’s aunt, said the adolescent wanted to travel to a residence just one block away. According to Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas, the case is receiving “the full attention of the Kansas City Police Department. “This is not something that has been dismissed, marginalized, or diminished in any way,” Lucas continued. According to civil rights attorney Ben Crump, the homeowner should be charged. “You can’t just shoot people without having justification when somebody comes knocking on your door, and knocking on your door is not justification,” Crump explained.
