A 10-year-old boy has reportedly been charged as an adult after he shot and killed his mother last week for failing to buy her a virtual reality headset. The fatal shooting took place near 87th and Hemlock streets around 7 am on Monday, November 21. Quiana Mann’s forty-four-year-old son was angry with her for waking him up early that morning. Police initially believed the boy, who has not been identified due to his age, was turning the gun on his finger when he accidentally fired a bullet and shot Mann. However, they later found out that he got the keys to the safe from her mother’s gun the night before.
According to WTMJ, the boy allegedly told investigators that he intended to shoot the wall just to “scare” her mother. After shooting Mann in the face, she alerted her 26-year-old sister, who discovered the body and called 911. The morning after killing her mother, the 10-year-old allegedly logged into her Amazon account and purchased the item: an Oculus Virtual Reality Headset. She reportedly attacked her seven-year-old cousin that same morning, prompting her aunt to take him to her grandmother’s house, where child welfare workers were present. The boy apparently told her grandmother, “I’m so sorry about what happened. I’m sorry I killed my mother,” and then she asked him if her Amazon package had arrived.
Quiana Mann was 44 years old.
Quiana Mann Murder Investigation
As mentioned, Milwaukee police initially ruled the shooting accidental. They let the delinquent stay with his family because of his age. However, the boy’s family contacted authorities with serious concerns the next morning. Her older sister, who called 911, told police her brother had had “anger issues” his entire life and that she had been seeing a therapist who gave her a “troubling diagnosis.” The police complaint pointed out how the boy “gets very angry and misbehaves.
The family told police about one case in which the boy, then 4, swung his puppy until he howled in pain. Mann was allegedly forced to get rid of the dog out of fear for his safety. In another case, just six months before the shooting, the boy allegedly filled a balloon with a flammable liquid and set it on fire inside the house, causing extensive damage in the process. He reportedly told his mother that he “hears five imaginary people talking to him”: two sisters, an older woman, a man, and a second man he called “bad.”
With that said, the boy allegedly admitted to police that he understood that guns could kill people. Prosecutors said he told them how he got his mother’s set of keys for the gun lock the night before. He “went to the basement and took up a firing position. He admitted to knowing that guns can kill people,” the investigators noted in the complaint. “Before shooting, he closed his left eye. His mother walked in front of him when he tried to shoot the wall to ‘scare’ her, so he admitted that he shot her in the face when she was approximately 3 feet from him. After shooting his mother, he put the gun in the closet in the living room, and then, he informed his older sister.” According to WISN, Mann had installed cameras in the house, but they were unplugged at the time of the shooting.
The boy is now charged with first-degree manslaughter and is currently being held on $50,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court for a status hearing on December 7. If he is found guilty, he could face 60 years in prison. Meanwhile, Mann’s loved ones have created a GoFundMe campaign to help the family and cover the funeral and other expenses. His funeral is scheduled for Friday, December 1. It is worth noting that the state of Wisconsin allows felons to be charged as adults if they are 17 years of age or older. However, charging a 10-year-old as an adult is virtually unheard of, WTMJ reported.
