Paul O’Grady, presenter and comedian, has died at the age of 67. Beloved television host and comedian who burst onto the scene with her drag persona Lily Savage. Career
Born in Birkenhead in 1955, O’Grady moved to London when he was 20 and worked as a social worker for Camden council. In 1978, he was developing his Lily Savage drag act in gay clubs, basing the rowdy single mother and occasional sex worker on female relatives. O’Grady gained attention in 1991 when he was nominated for the UK’s Perrier Award. most prestigious comedy award, and began appearing on radio and television as himself. O’Grady retired Savage to “a convent in Brittany” in 2004.
During his career, he hosted the Bafta-winning talk show The Paul O’Grady Show, Blankety Blank, the celebrity game show Paul O’Grady’s Saturday Night Line Up and the reboot of Blind Date, taking the reins from the longtime presenter.
