Paul Miller, 48, a soldier and Adelaide’s father-of-five died while climbing the Kokoda Track with his son for charity.
Paul Miller and his son Aaron flew to PNG to walk the track with a small group of veterans and first responders to collect funds for Operation K9. His wife, Amanda Kaplan, said the “passionate advocate for veterans” died of a heart attack on Sunday, the second day of the 96-kilometer trip, after covering 18.5 kilometers.

“On Anzac Day, please remember our veterans; Paul was a proud and well-respected member of the veteran community.” Miller was referred to as a ‘dearly loved’ spouse, father, uncle, son, brother, comrade, veteran, and sports aficionado.
He entered the Australian Defence Force in 1991 as a 16-year-old vehicle mechanic apprentice and was stationed in Brisbane, Toowoomba, Townsville, Darwin, and Adelaide before being discharged in 2014.
During this time, he served with the International Force East Timor, Iraq, Timor-Leste, and Afghanistan. He served 24 years full-time and two years in the reserves in total. He became a veteran advocate after being medically discharged due to service-related mental health difficulties. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade stated that consular help was being provided to the family.
Died while walking the Kokoda Track
“We send our deepest condolences to the family,” a spokeswoman stated yesterday. The Kokoda Track Authority oversees the track where an estimated 625 Australians were killed and over 1600 were injured during the violent five-month campaign fought between Australian and Japanese soldiers during World War II. The trail is described as a “challenging experience both physically and emotionally” for hikers.
