He is one of the accused in an ongoing “maxi-trial,” in which over 300 persons face charges relating to organized crime. According to the AFP news agency, Pasquale Bonavota was a leader who “took the most important decisions” with other top ‘Ndrangheta chiefs and “looked after the interests of the association in the Rome area, gambling sectors, and drug trafficking.”
His arrest comes three months after the high-profile capture of Sicilian mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro, who had been on the run for 30 years. The ‘Ndrangheta crime organization is built on family clans, or ‘drones, which have long dominated the mountain-top communities of Calabria’s southern area. While the Cosa Nostra of Sicily and the Camorra of Naples are more well-known worldwide, both have been weakened by a continuous police crackdown.
As a result, the ‘Ndrangheta has risen in their place and is now Italy’s most powerful mafia, with offshoots from South America to Australia with an estimated annual turnover of approximately $60 billion (£49 billion). They specialized in cocaine trafficking and control the global market; it is now estimated that they control up to 80% of Europe’s cocaine trade.
