Pasawm Lyhym, 16, a teenager has been arrested following the fatal stabbing of a 16-year-old boy in Melbourne – as police hunt for several knives believed to have been used in the attack.
A 17-year-old has been arrested in relation to the death of Pasawm Lyhym, who was knifed near Sunshine bus station, in Melbourne’s west, at about 3.45 pm on Thursday. The arrested boy from Carolina Springs was taken into custody on Friday, as police continue to search for at least two other people allegedly involved in the attack. The suspect is currently still assisting with enquires,’ a Victoria Police spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia on Friday evening.
CCTV footage appearing to show a person holding a knife in the moments after the 16-year-old was stabbed in broad daylight was released earlier on Friday. Multiple knives believed to have been used by the alleged attackers are yet to be found, with police investigating a white Audi sedan captured on CCTV footage. It is understood a group of teenagers between 15 and 16 years old approached Mr. Lyhym at the busy interchange before allegedly attacking him with a machete. Several commuters witnessed the attack, including a cousin of Mr. Lyhym’s. ‘I screamed and said that’s him, that’s him [her cousin],’ she told the Herald Sun. I tried to run and get help. I didn’t want to look. It was all so fast.’ Pasawm’s older brother Mawn Lyhym, 24, said his brother, who was heading home, was chased down by at least one attacker. He was funny, really nice, a welcoming and kind person,’ he said.

Police are investigating whether a potential rivalry between two schools in the area may have triggered the incident. Detective Senior Sergeant Janet Stevenson said Mr. Lyhym’s death may prompt retaliatory attacks from other students in Melbourne’s west. That would be of a concern to us and that’s why we want to engage with the families and engage with the witnesses,’ she told a press conference on Thursday. We’ll do anything in our power to stop that from happening. We’ve identified two other persons of interest, and that’s what we’re working on at the moment.’
Other relatives of Mr. Lyhym said they had spoken to him on Friday morning about going to see the new Fast and Furious movie before he was killed. Victoria Matu Community secretary Anna Takluem said that she had known the victim’s family for years and that the teenager was a familiar face at church. Loved ones gathered at Chin Baptist Church, in Sunshine’s industrial area, to hold a vigil for the 16-year-old, who had dreams of becoming a carpenter.
