Olusola Popoola, a London bus driver accused of killing a commuter when he put his foot on the accelerator instead of the brake will face a new trial in August. Olusola Popoola, 60, was driving an electric 507 single-decker that crashed into the back of a driverless bus that struck down Melissa Burr, 32, outside busy Victoria Station. Ms Burr, from Rainham, Kent, was walking between the two buses at the time of the crash at around 8:25am. m. on August 10, 2021. She was crushed and thrown into the air in front of two horrified colleagues and later died from her injuries.

Popoola admitted causing the death by reckless driving
Popoola, a bus driver with 20 years’ experience from Peckham, south-east London, has admitted causing the death by reckless driving but denies the more serious charge of reckless driving death. After impact with the rear of the stationary bus, the defendant continued to press the accelerator instead of the brake, before finally bringing his vehicle to a stop with the parking brake.
Data from the defendant’s bus found that it was traveling at around 8 mph at the point of collision and had a top speed of around 10 mph. Popoola, who has been driving the 507 bus route for the past 15 years, also denies seriously injuring another bus driver, Diana Mathuranayagam, by driving dangerously in the same collision. An Old Bailey jury was unable to reach verdicts on dangerous driving charges last week after nine hours and 38 minutes of deliberation.

Popoola told he thought there was a mechanical defect
Prosecutor Matthew Turner told the court today that the crown will seek a new trial. Popoola’s second trial will take place on August 29 and will last a week. Judge Philip Katz, KC, said she would remain on unconditional bond until her retrial. Popoola told the court that the bus had wobbled and he thought there was a mechanical defect. He said: ‘I panicked. I thought the brake had failed. I thought it was the parking brake that started the problem. “My brain didn’t connect with my leg, I had to use the foot brake.”
In a statement issued after Ms Burr’s death, her family said: “We are absolutely devastated by the loss and the void this incident has left in our lives.” “Melissa was a kind and considerate soul, she had a quirky charm with such a bright future ahead of her.”Popoola denies causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving, but he admits to causing death by reckless driving.
