Oleksandr Mishchenko, a police chief in the occupied Ukrainian city of Melitopol who defected to Russia after the city was taken over by the Russians, was killed in an alleged partisan bombing.
Oleksandr Mishchenko was killed when an improvised explosive exploded at the entrance of his apartment block. Recently, there have been allegations of increased Ukrainian partisan activity in the region. The dead officer, according to Melitopol’s exiled mayor, was a traitor.
The city is located in Zaporizhzhia province, one of four territories that Russia claimed to have annexed following its invasion last year, although only controlling a portion of them. Melitopol, after Mariupol, is the largest city on Russian-occupied territory since February 2022. The explosion occurred at 05:20 local time (02:20 GMT), according to Russia’s Interior Ministry.

Partisan attack kills police chief in Russian-occupied Melitopol
It was also stated that two police officers were hurt and hospitalized, but one of them later died. A video of the incident shows a crater close to the apartment block and cars with smashed windows nearby. “The path of each collaborator is predictable: yesterday betrayal, today panic, tomorrow massacre,” exiled Melitopol Mayor Ivan Fedorov said of the assassination on his Telegram channel.
He said that Mishchenko was the chief of the Priazovsky district police department before the invasion and that he not only deserted but also “tricked his employees into becoming traitors.” It’s unclear what Mr. Fedorov meant by his claim. According to Volodymyr Rogov, a Russian-installed official in the Zaporizhzhia area, Mishchenko has been threatened multiple times by “terrorists” for “restoring peace to the region, preventing illegal acts, and restoring order in his native land.”
Several Russian-installed officials were slain in attacks in occupied territories last year, notably the Zaporizhzhia province. One of them was Oleh Boyko, the deputy mayor of Berdyansk, who perished along with his wife in an apparent assassination in September. In addition, partisan activities assassinated several Russian-installed officials in the southern city of Kherson last year, before the successful Ukrainian offensive that took the city.
