Nima Momeni, a 38-year-old San Francisco software executive has been detained in connection with the fatal stabbing of Cash App inventor Bob Lee, whose death shocked the tech community. Nima Momeni, the founder of software firm Expand IT, was detained on suspicion of murdering Lee, who was stabbed to death last week in downtown San Francisco. Momeni and Lee were known to each other, according to San Francisco Police Chief William Scott, who declined to disclose a probable motivation or why the two men were there on the night in question.

The murder of Lee outraged California’s startup community and revived debate about public safety in San Francisco, with Tesla founder Elon Musk calling the city’s violent crime situation “horrific.” On Thursday, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins slammed Musk, accusing him of making reckless statements that presume “incorrect circumstances about Mr. Lee’s death, serve to mislead the world in their perceptions of San Francisco, and also negatively impact the pursuit of justice for victims of crime.”
Lee, a well-known personality in California’s tech sector, worked at Google and helped to design the Android platform. Lee later co-founded Cash App, an alternative to traditional banking, while working as Square’s chief technology officer, now known as Block. Lee joined MobileCoin as Chief Product Officer in 2021. On Friday, Momeni is scheduled to appear in court. Momeni presents himself on LinkedIn as an IT consultant and entrepreneur. According to California company papers, Momeni is the chief executive officer, secretary, and chief financial officer of the information technology consultancy firm Expand IT.
